Sigh... moving to Administrator Accept registration

Postby Andy » Fri Mar 16, 2012 11:18 pm

Getting hit by too many spambots. So I'm moving over to Administrator Accept registration. Meaning if you make an account, I have to confirm it before you can post. It's inconvenient, but necessary. The alternative is an endless stream of Russian Spam posts.

Another thing is the forum software seems a little outdated and could be vulnerable to phpBB exploits.

It's the latest version. And I'll keep it up to date.

Yeah, I don't know why the copyright is so out of date. But it's definitely the latest version. I learned that lesson the hard way on the last forum I ran.

Are there no CAPTCHA options for signup, or did you use one but it got circumvented (e.g. by cheap labor)?

Yeah I think spammers now just have people reading and typing in capchas.

Perhaps you can reinstate the registration page, only to have it fail after submission with a contact-the-admin message. Presumably, if everything's automatic, you can get spam lords to pay people to help digitise books?

Also, can you register me up another account so I can agree with myself?
